L’expression est de Fred Hoyle dans une émission radio de la BBC en 1948 (ou 49, les textes de la série ont été publiés en 1950), où il l’utilisait par dérision veut la légende, ce que lui-même conteste : « The BBC was all radio in those days, and on radio, you have no visual aids, so it’s essential to arrest the attention of the listener and to hold his comprehension by choosing striking words.
