Der „Herakleitos der Dunkle“ von Lassalle dem Hellen ist au fond ein sehr läppisches Machwerk. Bei jedem der vielen Bilder, worin Herakl[eitos] sich die Einheit von Affirmation und Negation herausarbeitet, in steps Lassalle und gibt uns bei der Gelegenheit irgendeinen Abschnitt aus der Hegeischen „Logik“ zum besten, die hardly gewinnt durch diesen Prozeß, immer in’ganzer Breite — wie ein Schulbub, der an einem Pensum den Beweis liefern soll, daß er sein „Wesen“ und seine „Erscheinung“ und den „dialektischen Prozeß“ loshat. Wenn der Schulbub sich derartiges anspekuliert hat, so kann man sicher sein, daß er dennoch den Gedankenprozeß exakt nur nach dem vorgeschriebnen Rezept und in den formes sacramentales vornehmen kann. Exakt so unser Lass[alle]. Der Kerl scheint sich die Hegeische Logik an Heraklit klarzumachen gesucht haben und gar nicht müde geworden zu sein, diesen Prozeß stets von neuem zu beginnen.
Heraclitus, the Dark Philosopher by Lassalle the Luminous One is, au fond, a very silly concoction. Every time Heraclitus uses an image to demonstrate the unity of affirmation and negation — and this is often — in steps Lassalle and makes the most of the occasion by treating us to some passage from Hegel’s Logic which is hardly improved in the process; always at great length too, like a schoolboy who must show in his essay that he has thoroughly understood his ‘essence’ and ‘appearance’ as well as the ‘dialectical process’. Once he has got this into his speculative noddle, one may be sure that the schoolboy will nevertheless be able to carry out the process of ratiocination only in strict accord with the prescribed formula and the formes sacramentales. Just so our Lassalle. The fellow seems to have tried to puzzle out Hegelian logic via Heraclitus, nor ever to have tired of beginning the process all over again.
Ici Marx se moque du vernis hégélien d’un texte de Lassalle, mais, dans une lettre charnière, dix ans plus tard, on le verra lui-même redevenir trop hégélien, ainsi que Engels dans des écrits plus étendus, Anti-Dühring et Dialectique de la nature, avec la conséquence que dans les générations futures, certains tomberont, sous couleur de « matérialisme dialectique », dans l’exégèse des formes sacramentales d’Engels. … it is one thing for a critique to take a science to the point at which it admits of a dialectical presentation, and quite another to apply an abstract, ready-made system of logic to vague presentiments of just such a system.
